Hedwig and the Angry Inch

Roxie Theatre Company
Playwright(s): text by John Cameron Mitchell, music and lyrics by Stephen Trask
Opens on: 02/07/2020 and Runs Through: 02/28/2020
Days/Times: Saturdays at 7:30pm; Sundays at 4:00pm
Synopsis:
Hedwig and the Angry Inch THE STORY: This groundbreaking Obie-winning Off-Broadway smash also won multiple awards for its hit film adaptation. It tells the story of "internationally ignored song stylist" Hedwig Schmidt, a fourth-wall smashing East German rock 'n' roll goddess who also happens to be the victim of a botched sex-change operation, which has left her with just "an angry inch." This outrageous and unexpectedly hilarious story is dazzlingly performed by Hedwig (née Hansel) in the form of a rock gig/stand-up comedy routine backed by the hard-rocking band "The Angry Inch." Using songs and monologues, Hedwig tells her story, which began in the former East Berlin where as Hansel he meets Luther, an American GI who promises to take the young man to the States on the condition that he switch his sex. After the bungled operation, Luther abandons newly named Hedwig in a Kansas trailer park, where she turns to music and meets geeky Tommy Speck, whom she takes under her wing and soon falls for. Tommy steals her songs, achieves rock star fame, and Hedwig is once again cast aside. She decides to demand redress and stalks Tommy's world tour, performing in the T.G.I. Fridays that are situated next door to his stadiums. Hedwig describes her life's search for "The Origin of Love" and her other half. It's a rocking ride, funny, touching, and ultimately inspiring to anyone who has felt life gave them an inch when they deserved a mile.

Mixed Couples

Boerne Community Theatre
Playwright(s): James Prideaux
Opens on: 02/14/2020 and Runs Through: 02/29/2020
Days/Times: Sundays at 2:30pm
Thursdays at 7:30pm
Fri/Sat at 8:00pm
Synopsis:
Mixed Couples The time is 1927, the place an airplane hangar in New Jersey where two couples wait for the fog to lift so their chartered plane can fly them to Washington. Their meeting is quite by chance, but also ironic, as it develops that the four had switched partners twenty-five years earlier, and haven't seen each other since. One couple has settled into suburban bliss, he a professor, she a housewife and mother; the other couple are Park Avenue types, he a rich, hard-driving businessman, and his wife (after all these years) still an aspiring actress. Cautious and civil at first, their conversation turns gradually bitchier (and funnier) as time hangs heavy, bootleg liquor flows, and old enmities are revived. As their veneers crumble, it is clear that neither couple has benefited as much as they had expected from their marital switch, and that beneath their pretense lies aridity, albeit tempered by the witty hijinks they go through to convince themselves (and us) that all's well in their reordered world..

These Shining Lives

Sheldon Vexler Theatre
Playwright(s): Melanie Marnich
Opens on: 02/08/2020 and Runs Through: 03/01/2020
Days/Times: Thursdays at 7:30pm
Saturdays at 8:00pm
Sundays at 2:30pm
Synopsis:
These Shining Lives THE STORY: Based on the true account of four women who worked for the Radium Dial Company watch factory in the late 20’s and early 30’s, the play chronicles the danger women faced in the American workforce, and the lack of concern by companies for protecting the health of its employees. The story relates the strength and determination of women considered expendable in their day. They are dying, it's true; but theirs is a story of survival in its most transcendent sense, as they refuse to allow the company that stole their health to kill their spirits—or endanger the lives of those who come after them.

- "…has a humanistic glow…clockwork precision… an initially comic and ultimately tragic look at employment within a system more concerned with profit than safety."  - Variety

- "Perfect, touching and wistful…beautifully tragic."  - Talkin' Broadway

Twelfth Night

Overtime Theater
Playwright(s): William Shakespeare
Opens on: 02/14/2020 and Runs Through: 03/07/2020
Days/Times:

February 14 – March 7

February 14, 15, 21, 22, 28, 29, March 6, 7 at 8:00 pm
February 23 at 3:00 pm; March 1 at 7:00 pm

Performance Venue: The Overtime Theater’s Gregg Barrios Theater

Synopsis:
Twelfth Night

Anytime you hear “Shakespeare comedy” you’re guaranteed at least one marriage and quite likely a case of mistaken identity. Twelfth Night is no exception, featuring twins, separated and feared dead by each other after a shipwreck. The sister takes on a male persona to survive, thus allowing for the mistaken identity, and comedic antics ensue. The primary quartet of lovers wind their complicated way to their happy endings; the lower nobility and servants play cruel, even violent, tricks on one another; and Feste the Fool plies her art in the thick of it all.

This production is adapted but all the language IS William Shakespeare’s - it is not “in translation” - but the setting is contemporary, somewhat abstract, and features several traditionally male roles played by and as women. The metatheatrical approach we take is well suited to the intimate space of the Overtime’s Gregg Barrios Theater: without a lot of physical spectacle, we allow for the language and the performances to remain the focus. As in Shakespeare’s day, you come not just to watch but to hear the play, which is also true of the songs of Twelfth Night. Local musician Jack Bonner has written and produced original music to Shakespeare’s lyrics and they will be performed live by our Feste, Meaghan Setterbo.
