As the ticking clock reminds you, only 60 minutes remain to complete this oh-so-important predictor of your future. But you didn't get the review sheets, the teacher doesn't like you, and your classmates are blatantly cheating. Time passes and the voices in your head remind you that though you are having trouble with the test, your personal life is far, far worse. Then you reach the essay question. The good news—it's an opinion essay. The bad news—it's in Chinese. And things aren't going to get any better!

Synopsis:
Pain Of The Macho PAIN OF THE MACHO (also known as Latinolgues) by Rick Najera

In this collection of comedic and poignant monologues revealing the Latino experience in America, satirist Rick Najera dares to proclaim - tongue in cheek, of course - that machos are regular guys, too. In The Pain of the Macho Najera has assembled an ensemble cast of quintessential Latin Lovers or wannabes who pour out their souls in side-splitting monologues. But the zing in the punchline hits us when we realize that melodramatic, teary-eyed spiels lend sly insights into the dilemma faced not just by Latin men but all those who must exist at the margins of two intersecting cultural spheres.

Hedwig and the Angry Inch

Roxie Theatre Company

Opens on: 10/12/2019 and Runs Through: 11/10/2019
Days/Times: Saturdays at 7:30pm; Sundays at 4:00pm
Synopsis:
Hedwig and the Angry Inch THE STORY: This groundbreaking Obie-winning Off-Broadway smash also won multiple awards for its hit film adaptation. It tells the story of "internationally ignored song stylist" Hedwig Schmidt, a fourth-wall smashing East German rock 'n' roll goddess who also happens to be the victim of a botched sex-change operation, which has left her with just "an angry inch." This outrageous and unexpectedly hilarious story is dazzlingly performed by Hedwig (née Hansel) in the form of a rock gig/stand-up comedy routine backed by the hard-rocking band "The Angry Inch." Using songs and monologues, Hedwig tells her story, which began in the former East Berlin where as Hansel he meets Luther, an American GI who promises to take the young man to the States on the condition that he switch his sex. After the bungled operation, Luther abandons newly named Hedwig in a Kansas trailer park, where she turns to music and meets geeky Tommy Speck, whom she takes under her wing and soon falls for. Tommy steals her songs, achieves rock star fame, and Hedwig is once again cast aside. She decides to demand redress and stalks Tommy's world tour, performing in the T.G.I. Fridays that are situated next door to his stadiums. Hedwig describes her life's search for "The Origin of Love" and her other half. It's a rocking ride, funny, touching, and ultimately inspiring to anyone who has felt life gave them an inch when they deserved a mile.

These Shining Lives

Sheldon Vexler Theatre
Playwright(s): Melanie Marnich
Opens on: 02/08/2020 and Runs Through: 03/01/2020
Days/Times: Thursdays at 7:30pm
Saturdays at 8:00pm
Sundays at 2:30pm
Synopsis:
These Shining Lives THE STORY: Based on the true account of four women who worked for the Radium Dial Company watch factory in the late 20’s and early 30’s, the play chronicles the danger women faced in the American workforce, and the lack of concern by companies for protecting the health of its employees. The story relates the strength and determination of women considered expendable in their day. They are dying, it's true; but theirs is a story of survival in its most transcendent sense, as they refuse to allow the company that stole their health to kill their spirits—or endanger the lives of those who come after them.
