"Cabaret" at The Vex

Sheldon Vexler Theatre
Audition/Workshop starts on: 01/20/2019 and Runs Through: 01/21/2019
Times:

Sunday, 1/20 and Monday, 1/21 starting at 7:00pm.  BY APPOINTMENT ONLY.

Production/Performance Dates:

Performances

  • Show Dates: May 4 – June 2, 2019
  • Performance times: Thursdays at 7:30pm, Saturdays at 8:00pm, Sunday matinees at 2:30pm. (Tentative evening performance on one Sunday.) 
  • Call times are 90 minutes before curtain.

Rehearsals

  • Regular rehearsals will begin in late March 2019 with a few possible meetings before then.
  • A typical Vex rehearsal schedule is Monday through Thursday, 7pm-10pm.  Fridays and earlier weekends will be added if needed due to conflicts.
  • The final two weeks and weekends of rehearsals leading up to the 05/04/19 opening will be busy and all actors are expected to be available.
  • Actors will be expected to be predominantly “off-book” in early April.

How to Audition

  • Read the details about the rehearsal and production schedule.
  • Email the Vex at vexler@jcc-sa.org to request an audition appointment.
  • All auditioners must prepare a dramatic monologue of your choice, not to exceed one minute. 
  • All auditioners must prepare a section of one song of your choice:  Please make sure that section includes "a verse & a chorus" or "verse & a bridge." The more dynamic the range/contrast between the two sections, the better!  Please bring cut and prepared sheet music for the accompanist. 
  • If you are interested in being considered for a character that is involved in formal choreography and dance numbers, please plan to attend the Dance Audition. 

Dance Auditions

  • Dance Auditions will be held at 9:00pm each day by appointment only.
  • Actors interested in the roles of the Emcee, the Kit Kat Dancers (male & female,) Sally Bowles, and a few other supporting roles must attend the Dance Audition.
  • Actors interested in the roles of Fraulein Schneider, Herr Schultz, and a few other supporting roles are not required to participate the Dance Audition. 
  • In your email request for an audition appointment, please indicate whether you also plan to attend the Dance Audition.
  • Final Note: Some supporting roles will be involved in dance numbers based on the abilities and strengths of the final cast. Some actors may end up playing multiple roles, of which, some will dance and some will not.

Jesus Christ Superstar

Artists In Progress
Audition/Workshop starts on: 1/5/2019 and Runs Through: 1/27/2019
Times: Audition by appointment Jan 5 and 6. Contact info@artistsinprogress.org to schedule a time. We are open to video audition as well.
Production/Performance Dates: March 29 to April 14
Details:

All actors can bring a current headshot (or recent photo) and 1 page acting resume or list of theater/performing experience if you have these (not necessary).

Please prepare a short selection (no longer than 16 bars or 1 minute) from Jesus Christ Superstar. Bring sheet music with your cut marked (we will also have a copy of the score available, please have your start and stop points chosen).

If you would like to audition for dancing only bring a 1 min prepared piece that shows off your dance style that would fit in the “Jesus Christ Superstar” musical style.  Also be prepared to learn a dance to perform to audition as well.

JUDAS:

Male 20s-30s. Jesus’ strategic confidante, dedicated, passionate, conflicted, unshakably practical, torn between an aggressive sense of self-preservation and the ideals of Jesus’ religious movement; rock tenor-low D to high E. Any ethnicity

JESUS:

Male 20s-30s. As much a pop culture idol as a religious leader, driven, charismatic, attractive, sincere, has a greater understanding of the dangers and matters at hand than any of his followers; rock tenor-low Bb to high E. Any ethnicity

MARY MAGDALENE:

Female 20s-30s. Struggles with aligning her worldly past with Jesus’ message, hopeful, steadfast, fragile, sweet with an edge; folk mezzo-low G# to B. Any ethnicity

PONTIUS PILATE:

Male 30s-40s. Roman Governor, calculated, thoughtful, adept at handling pressure, not quick to use the gravity of his power; rock baritenor-low A to Bb. Any ethnicity.

CAIPHAS:

Male 30s-50s. High Priest of the Pharisees, at the top of a crumbling system and violently resistant to conceding his place, cold, severe, strategic; bass-low C to middle F. Any ethnicity

ANNAS:

Male 20s-40s. The right hand man to Caiphas. Calculating and slithering. High rock tenor. Any ethnicity

SIMON:

Male 20s-30s. Particularly enthusiastic supporter of the anarchist aspect of Jesus’ mission, reckless, extreme, ready for an uprising; rock tenor. Any ethnicity.

KING HEROD:

Male 30s-50s. King of Galilee responsible for determining the fate of its Jewish captives, corrupt, condescending, decadent, charming with a sneer; baritenor-low B to high B. Any ethnicity.

PETER:

Male late teens-20s. A loyal follower of Jesus. Innocent and soft-spoken. Any ethnicity.

ENSEMBLE:

Male/Female 15-50s Either singers who are at home in pop/rock stylings, who can move well or dancers. Any ethnicity.

Director Barry Goettl will hold open auditions for the S.T.A.G.E., Inc. 2018-2019 season production DRINKING HABITS 2: Caught in the Act, by Tom Smith.  Auditions will be held at 4 p.m. on Sunday, March17, 2019 at Krause House Theatre, 1300 Bulverde Road in Bulverde.

Scheduled show dates are May 2, 3, 4, 5, 9, 10, 11, 16, 17, 18, 19

Details:

The Sisters of Perpetual Sewing miss the excitement of the old days when they were saving convents and reuniting long-lost families. So when they learn that the orphanage where Paul and Kate grew up is in peril, they can’t wait to come to the rescue.  But the merry mix-ups multiply in this warm and winsome sequel to Drinking Habits.

HANK WILLIAMS: LOST HIGHWAY

Director Lou Garza will hold open auditions for the S.T.A.G.E., Inc. 2018-2019 season production HANK WILLIAMS: LOST HIGHWAY the Music and Legend of Hank Williams, by Randal Myler and Mark Harelik.  Auditions will be held at 4 p.m. on Sunday, May19, 2019 at Krause House Theatre, 1300 Bulverde Road in Bulverde.  Bring a prepared song with CD, cassette, or sheet music.  Performers are needed for the following roles:

Scheduled show dates are July 11, 12, 13, 18, 19, 20, 21, 25, 26, 27, 28.

Details:

A spectacular musical biography of the legendary singer-songwriter.  The play follows his rise from his beginnings on the Louisiana Hayride, to his triumphs on the Grand Ole Opry, to his eventual
self-destruction at age 29.

Characters Needed:

CHARACTERS

 

HANK WILLIAMS - A south Alabama hillbilly singer, thin.. (This part has been cast)

TEE-TOT - A black south Alabama street singer of indeterminate age.

THE WAITRESS - The keeper of an all-night diner somewhere in the south. A cheerful, lonely person.

MAMA LILLY - Hank’s mother.  A “Marjorie Main” - strong and somewhat overbearing.

HOSS - A member of Hank’s band, The Drifting Cowboys. Plays upright (”doghouse”) bass.

JMMY (BURRHEAD) - A member of Hank’s band, plays lead electric guitar. From Oklahoma, especially so in his speech.

LEON (LOUDMOUTH) - Band member and a skillful on many instruments, featured on the fiddle.  Pleasant and taciturn.

FRED ROSE (PAP) - A founder and executive of Nashville music publishing company. A Midwesterner from Chicago.

AUDREY WILLIAMS - Hank’s first wife, later his professional widow. A blond Alabama beauty, sweet, exuberant and sure.

SHAG - The pedal steel guitarist
