Rancho Pancho by Gregg Barrios Classic Theatre and Jump-Start Performance Co. (website) Previews at JumpStart Performance Company (before heading to Tennessee Williams Festival Provincetown). A play by San Antonio native Gregg Barrios about the short-lived but intense relationship between playwright Tennessee Williams and south Texan Pancho Rodriguez. They met on the Texas-Mexico border in 1946 when Williams was returning from a trip to Mexico. Pancho and Williams lived in the French Quarter of New Orleans together. Williams was writing "A Streetcar Named Desire" during this period, and used his relationship with the volatile Pancho as a model for the character of Stanley Kowalski and his relationship with both Blanche and Stella. In 1947, Pancho was replaced in Williams' affections by Frank Merlo, but they maintained contact until the playwright's death in 1983. Co-commissioned with the Classic Theatre of San Antonio. Third by Wendy Wasserstein San Pedro Playhouse Cellar Theater (website) With the opening of its 2008 – 2009 Season, the San Pedro Playhouse Cellar Theater will be going green (and not due to an invasion of green-faced witches or toads and frogs.) In its first step to introduce eco-friendly practices to theatrical production, the Playhouse is making the Cellar a “green-space.” When THIRD by Wendy Wasserstein, the first show of the season, opens on August 29, many changes will be in effect. Some techniques that will be used to conserve resources include constructing sets, costumes and props using only recycled materials. Scenic artists will only use paint that does not contain volatile organic compounds — commonly known as VOCs — harmful chemicals that contribute to poor air quality. Stage lighting power usage will be reduced by 20 percent by using lower wattage and fewer and more energy efficient fixtures. The concession will serve organic products and products produced or manufactured in Texas and playbills will be printed on recycled paper. The title character’s full name is Woodson Bull III, but he’s known as “Third.” Professor Laurie Jameson is disinclined to like his jockish, jingoistic attitude. He is, as she puts it, “a walking red state.” Believing that Third’s sophisticated essay on King Lear could not possibly have been written by such a specimen, Professor Jameson reports his plagiarism to the college’s Committee of Academic Standards. But is Jameson’s accusation justified? Or is she casting Third as the villain in her own struggle with her relationships, her age and the increasingly polarized political environment? Cast: Directed by Catherine Babbitt, features Rita Crosby as Laurie Jameson, Dylan Peden as Third, Don Frame as Jack Jameson, Magda Porter as Nancy Gordon and Chelsea D. Fry as Emily Imbrie. Location: 800 W. Ashby Pl., San Pedro Park at Ashby (Map) Dates: August 29 to September 21, 2008 Times: Fridays & Saturdays at 8:00 PM, Sundays at 2:30 PM (No performance on Sunday, August 31) Tickets: Adults - $23 with a $3 discount for seniors 60 plus and active military; Students to age 22 with valid ID - $13. OLD MAC DONALD’S FARM (La granja del viejito MacDonald) Steven Stoli’s BackYard Theatre for Kids (website) A BILINGUAL PLAY ADAPTATION OF THE CLASSIC CHILDRENS SONG ADAPTATON BY LARISSA REYNOSA The Mac Donald farm is busy with plans for the fall. Silas and Mary Mac Donald sing songs and talk about all of their barnyard animals as they teach the children how to say animal names in Spanish. The simple Spanish word are mixed in this classic story as the children even learn how the animal serves a purpose on the farm. Highly recommended for pre-kinder and kindergarten aged children. Children in the audience are challenged to remember the exact order of all 9 animals as they sing along and enjoy the fun. Steven Stoli plays Silas Mc Donald, his daughter Larissa Reynosa plays Mary Mac Donald and Jordan Hogan plays all the animals. The original play was written by Paula Jo Peterson who also directs this show. We are also your official Birthday Party headquarters. The BackYard Theatre philosophy is to introduce young children (ages 2 – 7) to live theatre and show them that theatre can be fun, entertaining and educational. Moon Over Buffalo by Ken Ludwig Boerne Community Theatre (website) An acting couple are on tour in Buffalo in 1953 with a repertory consisting of Cyrano de Bergerac's revised one nostril version and Noel Coward's Private Lives. This backstage farce brought Carol Burnett back to Broadway and also starred Philip Bosco as her megalomanic, often drunk husband and leading man. Fate has given these thespians one more shot at starring roles in The Scarlet Pimpernel epic and director Frank Capra himself is en route to Buffalo to catch their matinee performance. Will Charlotte Hay appear or run off with their agent? Will George Hay be sober enough to emote? Will Capra see Cyrano, Private Lives or a disturbing mixture of the two? Hilarious misunderstandings pile on madcap misadventures, all of which are magnified by Charlotte's deaf mother who manages the theatre. The Shadowbox by Michael Cristofer San Antonio College Department of Theatre and Speech Communication This Pulitzer and Tony Award winning play touches on the dehumanizing quality death imposes. The play interweaves the lives of three dramatically different terminally ill patients and their loved ones into a tale of universal mortality. The action takes place during the course of one day, on a hospital campus. The brilliance of the work deals with how characters relate to their impending death whether its remorse, rage, anger, denial or reminiscence. Each family and indeed character, struggles with different levels of loss, and all aspects of grief are given voice during the course of the play. The success of Shadowbox lies in its ability to deal with such tender subject matter and draw no moral conclusions. This play only offers perspectives to the audience without compromising the serious nature of terminal illness.
