Lend Me A Tenor by Ken Ludwig
Boerne Community Theatre
907 E. Blanco Rd., Boerne, TX
Audition Dates: Sunday, July 26 & Monday, July 27, 2009 - 7pm both nights
This night in September of 1934 is the biggest in the history of the Cleveland Grand Opera Company.  World famous tenor, Tito Morelli, is to perform Otello, his greatest role, at the gala season opener.  Saunders, the General Manager, hopes this will put Cleveland on the operatic map.  Morelli is late;  when he finally sweeps in it is too late to rehearse with the company.  Through a hilarious series of mishaps, Il Stupendo is given a double dose of tranquilizers which mix with the booze he has consumed and he passes out.  His pulse is so low that Saunders and his assistant Max believe he is dead.  What to do?  Max is an aspiring singer and Saunders persuades him to get into Morelli's Otello costume and try to fool the audience into thinking he's Il Stupendo.  Max succeeds admirably, but Morelli comes to and gets into his other costume.  Now two Otellos are running around in costume and two women are running around in lingerie, each thinking she is with Il Stupendo!   Actors will do cold readings from the script. Actors auditioning for the roles of Tito, Max and the Bellhop must be reasonably good singers and will need to bring CD accompaniment or sing a capella about one minute of an Italian tenor aria.  However, this is a farce, and all actors auditioning must show a high degree of comic ability.
Characters: Max (mid 30s).  Assistant to Saunders and boyfriend of Maggie; an "average guy" who finds his courage and his voice.
Maggie: (late 20s-early 30s).  Pretty and quirky girlfriend of Max; willing to fall under the spell of who she thinks is Il Stupendo.
Saunders: (50s-60s).  General Manager of the Cleveland Grand Opera Company; authoritarian.
Tito Morelli: (50s).  Imposing world-famous tenor, know also to his fans as Il Stupendo; speaks with an Italian accent.
Maria: (40s). Wife of Tito, Sophia Loren type: busty, proud and excitable; also speaks with an Italian accent.
Bellhop: (20s).  Ambitious; keeps trying to audition for Saunders by bursting out in an Italian aria
Diana: (30s).  Beautiful, very sexy soprano; in the opera company (non-singing role)
Julia: (50s-60s).  Chairman of the Opera Guild; behaves seductively and is intent on seducing Tito.
Cast: Directed by Patty Loftis
Performances: September 11-26, 2009
Contact: For more information email the director at plilllnd@gvtc.com or call her at 210-378-4562.  If necessary, it is possible to pre-audition for the roles of Tito, Max and the Bellhop.
